Parents Notes
Cub’s starts at 7:15 on Tuesdays (except
where advises for special events). Ends at 8:45 PM. Cubs are
to be dropped off in the lower Auditorium (as the Beavers
are up stairs before us) and picked up in the gym (Upper Aud.).
Please be prompt in picking up the Cubs. If you are not able
to pick up your child, and have made arrangements for another
parent of family member to pick up your child, make sure that
you tell one of the leaders.
Weekly dues are $2.00. These dues allow us to
off set all many of the costs for supplies, snacks, and outings.
We do not get any of the money paid for registration –
all of the money goes to Scouts Canada. Dues are payable in
one of two ways – one cheque for $28.00 to cover up
to Christmas, and a second cheque for $42.00 in the New Year
to cover the balance of the year, or you can give us one cheque
in September for the entire amount ($70.00). We also receive
funds from Apple Day, and Popcorn sales (more about those
later)
1st Port Nelson supplies the Neckers, and the
epaulets. The balance of the uniform (shirt, sash, woggle
and Cub book) is the Cub’s responsibility. A cub is
considered to be in full uniform if he/she are wearing all
of the items above, and carrying their Cub Book.
This year, we are planning something new for
Badge testing. We are going to have monthly "Badge Nights".
The purpose is two fold – so all Cubs can participate
in group badge work (and towards the Black Star), which we
will be doing on those nights, and to test on those nights
only. This allows us on the other nights of the month to run
the program uninterrupted.
Popcorn sales and Apple Day are our major fundraisers.
We get approximately 50% of Popcorn sales directly into our
group (If Cubs sell $1000, we get 500). For Apple Day we get
100%. This year, we want to ask the Cubs to sell for one hour
on either Thursday or Friday Night (Sept. 30/Oct 1), + one
hour on Saturday October 2nd. They are allowed to sell for
more, but that is the minimum we are requesting. Cubs MUST
participate in Apple Day. Last year the money from these two
things help to pay for fees for the camps and paid for the
entire Cubaree portion including meals. It also paid for Kub
Kars (along with the dues collected).
Our first camp is the weekend of October 15th
(the weekend after Thanksgiving). This camp is at Camp Manitou,
and will run from Friday at 7, to Sunday at 11:00. Parents
are invited to attend all of our camps, and will be cheerfully
put to work. (The more help we have from parents, the more
time we can devote to running programs). More details about
the camp will be forthcoming.
Second camp is tentatively planned for the weekend
of Feb 25th (2005).
We thought for our third camp this year, we
would camp at the Toronto Zoo. This is a great experience
where the kids will sleep in the middle of the African Savannah
area (in tents) and be able to hear the animals at night (when
they are most active). For more info – try this link
"Toronto Zoo Specials Events and Programs Bush Camp".
Costs is a bit higher ($55.00 for one night), but we will
plan some fund raising to try and offset the costs. Unfortunately
this books up pretty fast, so we will need to make a decision
quickly if this is the way we want to go.
Although the Leaders organize and run the program,
we have found we cannot do it all. We are looking for the
parents to come forward and help where ever they can. Some
of the things we are looking for parents to do include: |
